An entrepreneur is a person who takes risks to create a new business venture. Is the entrepreneur born or made? This question forms the basis of discussion of this paper. Many debates have been done around this subject from businessmen to academics. This essay will evaluate different arguments supporting the statement of whether the entrepreneur is born or made. Finally, a conclusion will be made based on the writer’s own personal opinion about this topic.

The argument supporting the statement of whether entrepreneurs are born is a scientific one, meaning that there are entrepreneurs possess entrepreneurial genes. The characteristics of an entrepreneur include persistence, independence, extroversion, innovativeness, need for achievement and risk taking. These characteristics make people believe that entrepreneurs are born with and cannot be taught thus an entrepreneur cannot be compared to an office manager. Scott Shane stated in the wall street journal that 40% of the variety in the tendency to be an entrepreneur is inherited. Many people believe that not everyone can be an entrepreneur; they need to have innate qualities that will influence their talents to be recognised in business. The view that not everybody has the ability to become an entrepreneur is also shared amongst professionals. Another supporting argument for this statement is by looking at the two of the United Kingdom’s most successful entrepreneurs Alan Sugar and Richard Branson. It is common fact that both of these men did not achieve significant success in education. They left school when they were 16to start their own business venture and have now become two of Britain’s richest men.
