Employee Discipline Checkpoint Week 1

1. I think using punishment can be very helpful, to a certain point. If employees were not punished, who says they couldn’t sit around drinking coffee and visiting all day while getting paid. If employees know that there will be consequences, the work that needs to get done, probably will.

2. I believe most managers use punishment because if they didn’t, I think there would be a lot of lazy workers in the world. With punishment being on the side of work, people will know that what is required of them at their job needs to get done or they could get in trouble or even fired.

3. The downside of using punishment could be a development of stress in the workplace as well as workers not liking their bosses. They may even all go against the boss and could perform a strike, which could put the business at risk. Using a positive reinforcement, I don’t think has much of a downside. If employees are praised with a raise for being good workers they will continue to be good workers. If employees are not being appraised, they would quickly find a new job or perform poorly at work.

4. I have worked for a boss that did not use much punishment at all, if any. It was at a small town café with only a few employees, in which we did pretty much anything we wanted. I now currently work for Wal-Mart, where punishment is used. If too many days are missed, unexcused, punishment will take place, with what is known as a coaching. If too many coaching’s are received, the employee will be fired. Coaching’s can also be used for other things, simple things like dress code, taking too long of breaks and larger things, like not working the job correctly. My behavioral response is usually good towards this type of punishment because I believe it is needed. Although, sometimes I believe they go too far with punishments.

Sandy- Sure.

- Please, close the door and have a seat. I have noticed...
