Penny Lab
Pre-Lab
Purpose- To find the density of the pennies
Introduction- The object is to find the density of the pennies using the water displacement method. The qualitative data being measured is the pre and post 1982 pennies. The quantitative data being measured 25 pre- 1982 pennies and another 25 post-1982 pennies. All variables were kept constant except the one being used.
Hypothesis- If more pennies are added then the density will be greater.
The outcome should be reasonable because more pennies = more weight.
Lab
Materials
* electronic balance
* 25 pre-1982 pennies
* 25 1982 and older pennies
* 50 mL plastic graduated cylinder
* tap water
Safety
* No safety items
Procedure
0. Mass 5 pre-1982 pennies. Record in table
0. Determine the volume of the 5 pennies by water displacements
0. Keep pennies in the graduated cylinder (50 mL control) until you finish collecting data for all 25 pennies,
0. Repeat steps 1 and 2 until you have collected data for at least 25 pennies.
0. Repeat steps 1-3 for 1982 and older pennies.
Observations/ Data
The qualitative data of the pennies are pre-1982 and post- 1982 pennies. The quantitative data for the pennies had a similar mass and volume. The only changes observed were the change of pennies which caused...
