There are 5 things that should be kept in mind when working with children living with DMD (Duchene Muscular Dystrophy).

1. Young men living with DMD often experience learning problems. Most often learning problems come from not being able to process the amount of information that is being taught. Teach to their ability and to their level of understanding. “Students with DMD have above-average intelligence” (Parents Project Muscular Dystrophy, 2014).

2. Accommodations in the classroom, including adaptive equipment can help maximize the learning ability of students with DMD, as well as their physical capability. Supportive seating, raised desktops, special grip pencils, note-taking and access to computers or tape recorders are examples of things that can help enhance the learning of students with DMD.

3. Duchene Muscular Dystrophy does not define the personality of the student who is living with it. Student living with DMD are individuals living with a disability and should not be categorized into a group that they are all the same. Just as each child has their own way of learning, so do children living with DMD.

4. “Many boys with DMD experience emotional and behavioral problems” (PPMD 2014). They tend to show some difficulty expressing their frustrations and are easily angered and irritated. Sometimes they can be impulsive and at without thinking. Students with DMD can become depressed, have anxiety, or even express loneliness. It is important when a teacher notices these emotions and shows support and encourages their students.

5. Keeping confidentiality of all students living with DMD. It is important to keep all information about students confidential. Parents often struggle with what to tell their child, how much to tell them, and when to tell them. Communicating with the parents on a regular basis is part of the key to success with students living with DMD.
