Language is Limitless

We often think of language as just the words we write or speak but it can be so much more than that. It can tell us so much more than that like how a person was raised or where they have been. Language is not always easy and can be very frustrating at times but if we take the time to learn and understand it then the conversations that we have will be more productive. I know for me this is not always been as easy task.

Language for me used to be a challenge on the respect that my parents are from two very different backgrounds. My dad was born in a small community in West Virginia and my mom was born here in Ohio so there are many differences between them. It was hard growing up because my mom would explain things one way and dad would explain them in a completely different way and I was the little kid who had no idea what in the world either of them where talking about.

Like my dad always use to refer to the garbage as file 13 and when he would say “file 13 this for me” I would just look at him like he was crazy. He had to explain it to me multiple times before it stuck with me and even know I notice that I use that same expression with people and they tend to give me the same crazy look I always gave my dad. He also had this phrase that he use to say and I found it was the weirdest thing I had ever heard. He always used to say to people “at the same token” I took it to me the same thing as at the same time or something to that effect but I would always hear him say it I would just laugh because it was funny. Most of the random words I know or quirky phrases I have I picked up from my dad and when I use them in conversation people always look at me a little strangely but that’s ok.

There are times we people tell me that they find it hard to understand me and I always ask the same thing “why?” They tell me it’s because I’ve used words or phrases that they aren’t familiar with or that I put an accent on certain words. Which, I do notice...
