Problem Statement:

In this experiment, I will answer the question “Does organic bat guano work as well as Miracle Gro on

the growth of tomato plants?”

Relevance:

We know that commercial fertilizes are detrimental to the food we eat. I would like to determine that organic bat guano works just as well as the commercial fertilizer Miracle Gro in the growth and production of fruit on the tomato plants in this experiment.

Literature Review:

In a similar experiment (Jr. Science, 2003, “Organic vs. Chemical Fertilizers) green beans were used. They tested which plants would grow faster, taller, and produce more beans. They also tested which plants would look healthier and which were healthier for humans.

I another experiment (Raw Food Life, 2010, “Raw Science”) they conducted a massive 32-year field study. Their focus was primarily on aspects of crop quality and crop yield. In this study their goal was to get similar yields for both organic and conventional farming.

Experimental Design Steps:

Purchase 2 starter tomato plants that are approximately the same size, width, and circumference (I chose Better Bush, due to maturation .

Purchase both types of fertilizers; organic bat guano, and Miracle Gro.

Purchase organic potting soil suitable for vegetables.

Plant the 2 tomato plants in separate containers, preferably 5 gallons or larger, large enough to let them grow.

Label each container.

After planting, measure both plants and log in a growth journal.

Mix up organic bat guano per instructions on the container and water/fertilize the tomato plant marked OBG.

Mix up Miracle Gro per instructions on the container and water/fertilize the tomato plant marked MG.

Place containers in a sunny area. I placed mine on an elevated deck that gets all day sun.

Water 1 gallon of water every day since plants are in containers....
