My family’s values and traditions have shaped me into the person I am today and I pride myself on living my life by the same guidelines by which I was raised. My family structure may be slightly different from some other families but I believe that despite the fact that my mother and father were divorced when I was only three I never felt like I lost either of my parents or that my family was any less of a family because my parents were no longer married. I think one of the more prominent sociological concepts that I noticed in my life was the importance of the roles and who filled them.

After my parent’s divorce they worked hard to make sure I wouldn’t feel any type of void. I was still spending time with my dad during the week and every other weekend. My parents played two very important roles in my life, as in most families. My mom and dad were the leaders and instructors in my life. I looked to them to answer any questions I had or take care of any type of problem I may have been experiencing. I was also very fortunate to be able to look to four more leaders and instructors in my life, my grandparents. I could not imagine growing up without having the extra support from my grandparents. Although only my maternal and paternal grandmothers are still living I still look to them for advice and they are very supportive of me and what I do with my life.

Every role that I have mentioned so far are roles that fit in a normal family lifestyle, but new members came into my family not long after my parents divorced. My mom got remarried when I was six years old. In addition to a new father figure in my life I also became somewhat of a role model myself, to a younger brother. My everyday life with my mom was changing and I was gaining more family members and also more people to look to for support.
