Teams that are successful rely on each individual team member to contribute his or her best strength in order to reach the team’s desired goals and objectives. When team members are selected project managers should keep in mind the individual weaknesses and strengths. Project managers should also measure his or her availability to complete the project. Project managers express goals with the directives set by share holders and executives. This will help team members fully understand the project before making a full commitment to the project.

Selecting Team Members

When individuals are selected for a team, individuals with some prior experience are the first to be considered. Individuals with extra experience can reduce conflict and risk. Each member chosen should be able to contribute to every aspect of the project. Project managers should select team members with positive and adaptable attitudes. Although experience is a positive attribute, lack of communication skills could do more harm to the project than the individual’s expertise, communication is crucial in a group assignment. Clearly defining the expectations and responsibilities of each team member and what is expected of them is very important when selecting team members. Creating a friendly and professional environment for the team to work in will ensure success for the project.

Team-building strategies

Successful team building strategies can be defined by the following examples: Celebrating achievements of the entire team. Every team member is important and when a milestone is reached during the project, the team should be rewarded as a whole. Recognition for the team can be as simple as a nice dinner as a group or a vacation for the weekend.
