Part 1- Analysis of Work Environment

I. Identify a potential or current work environment

This writer currently is employed with the North Carolina Department of Corrections as a Social Worker. There are approximately over 3300 offenders that are currently housed in the facility. As a social worker this writer is currently responsible for supervising a caseload of about 350 offenders. This writer has many professional roles in the prison environment that includes meeting with offenders on a daily basis. Social Workers are responsible for assessing the offender’s risk needs in areas such as prison adjustments, anger management, reoffending, interpersonal conflicts, substance and alcohol abuse, mental health, education, emergency services and other needs that may arise. Social workers must perform case management which is matching the offender’s criminal genic needs to the types of programs or services the offender’s may need during incarceration. This writer must meet with her Institutional Program Manager at least once a week for questions and or concerns and to report findings.

I. Describe the population

The offender population this writer will serve will vary in many ways. The age of the offender’s incarcerated today ranges from the ages of 21 through the age of 90 or older. The offenders are from different cultures including the Spanish, Latino, Irish, European, African American, Germans and etc. The number of foreign prisoners is usually high, with distinguished exceptions such as Poland, and more generally speaking the countries of Central or Eastern Europe. Many of the social norms inside the prison facility includes gangs such as the White Supremacists, Bloods, Crips, MS-13, Juggalos Five Percenters, Vice Lords and the Gangster Disciples just to name a few.
