Case Analysis

The recent recession impacted Americans in a many ways. No one was affected more than companies trying to sustain business operations with minimum revenue. Today, we will discuss how companies like Best Buy and Home depot revised their business strategies with a special emphasis on employee involvement.

Steve Ellis, of Bain and Company, was faced with cut back in his management consulting firm. During this situation, Ellis maintained positivity that there was growth possibility in order to find an outlet/solution during the recession. Cognitively, Ellis believed that he could continue to build upon his company’s consulting business by both seeking out new consultants and recruiting experienced veteran consultants. The textbook state that “behavioral component refers to how one intends or expects to act toward someone or something” (Kreitner, Kinicki p. 158). Ellis chose to not to shy away from the opportunity by aggressively target former consultants, which supports the behavioral component that he believes was the turning point his companies resurgence.

Home Depot and Best Buy both try to increase employee involvement by doing exactly that, involving the employee and not shutting them out. Frank Blake from Home Depot sought out by boosting morale and setting more realistic goals to engage hourly employees who can now strive to receive a bonus. He also extended restricted stock grants to assistant store managers, a benefit that was not available at this level, which now promotes workforce interactivity. It gets the team striving towards a goal that allows them to achieve and accomplish objectives via the organization. The online surveys that Best Buy has implemented has given employees the opportunity to be part of the change by providing ways they would improve the company. By giving their staff the chance to become part of solution to their economic issues, Best Buy increased their employees’ commitment to the company.
