In Australia, smoking leads to 19000 deaths annually. Research indicates that 66% of lifetime smokers are likely to suffer from a tobacco related disease. The majority of these deaths result from cancer, a disease believed to be caused by smoking. Tobacco is addictive and smokers find it hard to quit the practice. Cessation is ongoing process that requires continuous engagement between nurses and the victims. Health professionals in the country have adopted evidence based practices to help avert deaths resulting from the habit. Nurses rely on the current research which link smoking with cancer related deaths. Nurses in Australia have adopted practice guidelines in a bid to help smokers quit. They have adopted the 5A framework to that summarizes the steps for smoking cessation. The Australian nurses recognize the importance of developing a systematic approach to help smokers abandon the practice. They encourage routine enquiry and conduct surveys in the waiting bay to gain evidence that is integrated with the country’s EBP in the fight against the practice. The nurses rely on evidence contained in the current literature that advocates for provision of counseling services to smokers by the nurses. In addition to providing counseling services to the victims, nurses also assess the smoker’s willingness to cease smoking and provide additional self help materials. They also educate patients on the benefits that accrue from smoking cessation. Due to the addictive nature of tobacco, majority of smokers do not make to quit the practice in their first attempt.
