Outline for Introduction and Chapter 1

I. The moves of writing

a. Templates

i. “they say ____; I say _____” formula

1. This formula is basically a way for academic writers to implement the “moves” of writing into their own works. Listening to what others say can be strategically used to improve one’s own writing and better engage in conversations and arguments with others.

2. Templates vary in a range of formats, and can be interpreted differently by individuals.

ii. Understanding the argument

3. Identify the “they say concept”

a. To be an impactful writer, one must not simply base their entire viewpoints off of individualized opinion. The viewpoint of others must be taken into account.

i. MLK Example:

1. Address and respond to critics, or your audience.

b. Identify the concept and be identifiable to the reader

ii. Make representations the can be, at the least, identifiable with a range of people.

iii. Matters as such do not have to be revolved around an agree or disagree basis, but instead can revolve around a simple “yes” or “no”.

c. Why do writers use the they say I say concept?

iv. Agree/Disagree

v. Challenge the standard ways of thought

vi. Make things interesting or controversial

d. The agree/disagree concept in responding to writing does not have to represent any form of controversy in regards to the matter, and whether one agrees or disagrees with a particular issue, the they say I say concept can be just as useful towards either viewpoint.

e. Try to avoid the simple yes/no response to present a more complicated argument.
