Of all of these factors, which do you feel, for better or for worse, has had the biggest impact on humanity over the last century? Why?

Technology

Technology has affected every avenue of life both in advancement and destruction. Technology made knowledge more widely available. This availability of information made humankind more attuned to the struggles of others and gave heed to the importance of human rights. Technology has improved our health and medical awareness. Improved transportation and made the world so much more accessible. Assembly lines and machinery made mass production and economies of scale possible. But to the opposite extreme our technology is causing global warming, pollution and with our new technological knowledge we can even annihilate the world with our weapons of mass destruction.

Communication technological advances included Television, radio, personal computer, magnetic tape, wireless technology, Radar, artificial intelligence, fiber optics and of course the internet. Communication has always been the key to success. The television brings us news, innovations, dreams and creativity. The radio also brought news, weather, stories, and music into homes. The personal computer sped up so many aspects of life. Computations, retention of knowledge and information, the ability to solve long and complex problems and make comparisons with them helped garner future innovations. The magnetic tape was first developed as an adhesive but later was found to be able to record sound and later video. Wireless technologies are exploding now from home phones, smart phones to wireless computer capabilities made networking and sharing of information and devices feasible. Radar communicated the need for caution in ships or air and also helped some evade communication with police officers. Fiber optics sped up technology as did the internet.
