eSBE RESEARCH REPORT

For my small business enterprise, my team (stream 1D) has to base our ideas on Sport, Entertainment and Leisure. Our target market is the students of Auckland University of Technology. My business has to look at external factors that could affect our business in a positive or negative way. An external factor that could affect my business is the competitive environment. The competitive environment analyses how different markets have key influencing factors that affect the way in which our market can compete. The competitive environment could affect our business because of sports like rugby or entertainment such as movies or local fairs. Since sports and entertainment are well known in New Zealand, our team would have to compete well in order to run a successful business.

In the competitive environment, a sport such as rugby could affect my business. This is because rugby is a well known sport in New Zealand. Ever since New Zealand won the rugby world cup in 2011, the awareness and popularity for rugby had risen. Because of the rise in popularity and awareness for rugby, the rugby world cup market was successful in selling merchandise that related to the event. Merchandise such as; car flags, banners or even small rugby balls. This affects my business as we have to sell products that look more attractive and are more affordable in order to compete with rugby merchandise.

Since rugby is such a popular sport in New Zealand, this could be a threat to our business because of popularity being an issue. For example, the All Blacks, being a very successful team and locally recognized, have been sponsored by many sport stores such as; Rebel Sport, Foot Locker. These stores also promote rugby by selling products that represent teams like the All Blacks.
