Module 2.3: Multi-cultural Protocol

To support a meeting between South Korea and Greece will not be an easy task. Though both countries and cultures view respect in the business setting to be the highest priority, there are several differences to be aware of when interacting. In South Korea, conservatism is very important. Also, when initiating first contact, it is important to acknowledge the elder of the group first as a sign of respect. The senior of the group will also tend to be the person of highest rank and have the most decision making power. Being sure not to be too assertive or loud in conversation is also a wise decision. Eye contact is important to maintain while speaking however South Koreans also tend to use indirect forms of communication or silence in meeting settings. Asking directly or for clarification will help when ideas and points are not fully conveyed. With all international communication there are language barriers that have to be considered; therefore patience is important when conversing with these other nationalities. Another point of consideration is while presenting and negotiating, all items handed to Koreans should be done with both hands as a sign of respect. Koreans are very traditional and this practice is part of their culture. These traditions are very different from those in the Greek culture.

When first making introductions to businessmen/women of Greece, it is important to understand how their culture is used to communicating. A handshake and eye contact is common place during initial meetings. It is also important to know that it is normal for conversation to be loud and with lots of emotion. This is simply the normal tone of voice as Greeks tend to be very passionate about what it is they are trying to convey. Hand signals are used a lot while talking in the Greek culture, however caution should be taken.
