Happiness

The first person I interviewed was Kelly Butler. She is a 50 year old mother, grandmother and wife who works hard to take care of her family. She is one who always puts herself last. Kelly has lived a hard life with struggle, illness, abuse, and finally later in her life found the right path for her. She is my sons Aunt whom has been estranged from our lives for many years, until we recently reconnected.

The second person I interviewed is Mike Haanen. He is my 33 year old husband of six years who works all over the country and rarely gets to spend time at home with his family. Mike is a very hard working man who works his fingers to the bone to make sure his family has a roof over their head, food in their mouths and clothing on their backs.

Question: Has your definition of happiness changed over the years?

Response: “Definitely! Experiences…life! Bad marriages, having kids, being sick, good marriage and having the best friends ever”!

Question: Do you expect it to change again?

Response: “No. I have been through a lot. I think I have finally found what happiness truly is: its spending time with the ones you love while you have the chance, its watching your kids and grandkids grow up, enjoying being with the one you love, taking time daily to thank God for what you have instead of complaining about what you don’t have. Its about being able to share your life with true friends, and most of all being happy with the person you, yourself have become. (K. Butler,...
