Executive Summary

Business Communication in Japan is substantially different than that of Western countries. To best understand how to communicate in a business setting in Japan, a person must understand the countries culture first. Japan places a great deal of emphasis on hierarchy. Elders are greatly respected in this culture. Harmony and “saving face” are two other important aspects of Japanese culture. The overall good of the group is very important and Japanese people place a lot of importance on avoiding getting embarrassed or embarrassing others. The business etiquette of Japan should be greatly studied by individuals wanting to work in Japan. Understanding the dynamics of Japanese business cards and following the proper business meeting protocol will give an individual a great advantage over those who are unfamiliar with the way things work. Knowing how to properly dress in Japan is very important as well to ensure you are taken seriously by your coworkers and business partners. Visitors to Japan should familiarize themselves with the practice of Nomikai as well, a party for coworkers to get to know one another. If a visitor is able to speak basic Japanese phrases then they will have a much easier time in transitioning to work and getting along with business partners.
