La Haine analysis

People have always been told to respect their elders, the authorities and overall people with more power than them. What happens if this authority is doing us wrong? Should we fight back or must we just accept the abuse because they are asserting the authority they have over us. The movie La Haine is about three teenagers, Said, Vinz and Hubert, who feel oppressed by their local police force and are conflicted what to do about it. Movies such as La Haine show how some authorities around the world abuse their power and disrupt and destroy the lives of their citizens.

People are taught from the time they are young to respect their elders. The question is where is the point where people can no longer respect their elders if they are in fact being mistreated. This concept goes against everything that we were taught as young children. In the movie these teenagers and their community had to try and stand up to the police. The police was being extremely brutal and had even killed one of these boys’ friends. The boys and their community could no longer stand for this brutality especially after the death of their friend. Unfortunately, the boys thought that they would try and revenge their friends’ death by themselves, which just led them to bigger trouble. Instead of trying to negotiate with the police the boys simply put a target on their backs that put them in a lot of danger. This is where we can start to see how sometimes going against the authority figure is necessary.

The police in these teenagers town used unnecessary police brutality. For instance, when Said and Hubert were taken in for questioning they were smacked and tortured. There was no need for this because these boys had personally not done anything wrong the police were simply having fun messing around with the kids. Said and Hubert were worried that they would miss the train home and asked the police if they could be let go in time to make the last train and the police made it...
