Socialization into Nursing

Introduction

According to Fundamentals of Nursing, Socialization is the informal education that occurs as you move into your new profession. It is the knowledge gained from direct experience, observation in the real world, and informal discussion with peers and colleagues. Professional socialization begins when you enter the educational program and continues as you gain expertise throughout your career (Wilkinson & Leslie, 2011). Pub Med states that professional socialization is a complex process with four critical attributes: learning, interaction, development, and adaptation. Comprehensive educational programs, competent role models, and the provision of adequate field experiences were found to be the antecedents of these attributes. They have either positive or negative consequences for the professional development of nurses. These findings not only add to the body of knowledge, but also serve as an important impetus for further theory development and research in nursing.

Nursing Theorist

There are many angles and approaches when it comes to implementing care. I believe all theorists have their reasons for adhering to their theories. Upon glancing through the list provided for theorists, Margaret Newman’s theory of Health as Expanding Consciousness caught my attention. It was its focus on the importance of consciousness to existence that grasp my interest because I believe consciousness is required to fully understand life. Consciousness is the main tool that can lead to different and many avenues or experiences that begets curiosity and cravings for understanding. Without consciousness it will be extremely challenging to partake in a profession such as nursing.
