2/11 – John Burke Supercurriculum Lecture

John Burke spoke about start-up businesses and what truly goes into creating a new one. He begins by narrating his story of how he went into a start-up business from a very young age and learned the functions of the company and many other great things that are often not perceived working for a larger company. He narrates his experience of moving to Pennsylvania and creating a start-up company of his own because although he knew he was not very creative, he knew how to execute. Afterwards, Burke ended up selling the company and then took a break from everything and went to Business School. It was there where his life changed. He realized the importance of networking and the networking opportunity he had in the Business School changed everything. He took a job in Baltimore, MD and then got an open AVS Venture and attempted opening some offices although they did not succeed.

Burke then began talking about how if you have a curriculum framework, everyone can start a company. He began working as a venture capitalist and discovered so many new business ideas and all the thoughts and complications that goes into making a business. He realized the mistakes he had made in his own start-up, for example, location. Location is a very important factor depending on the industry you are trying to market towards. People are also a very important factor into making the company work. Networking is the key point. Through your network is how you will acquire the necessary means and help and ideas to function the company. It is all about the people, the employees, and the people that are hired that need to meet a certain criteria: follow the same values you do and be more intelligent. However, the strongest key-point about opening a business is passion. Burke talks about how only the people who are truly passionate about what they do are the “founders of movements”.
