Where does fashion even come from in today’s world? Does it come from fashion magazines and online websites, or does it come from female students looking at other female students, and giving it a little extra personality. In the article “The Campus as Runway,” by Ruth La Ferla, Ruth helps us answer some questions just with the title. Although this article is not peer reviewed, it is important because of the information it gives us on how women dress and where they get their fashion inspirations. Ruth interviewed a number of female students at Columbia University. She tells us what the females were wearing at the time, and she tells us where some of the college women get their fashion. Some of the women even tell Ruth what they cannot wear to class. They said “The stereotype used to be that college students live in sweat pants and don’t care about fashion,” and that “today that isn’t so” (La Ferla). Those women even said that they would not be caught dead wearing sweat pants to class. This article works well with the article by Jessie A. Warden because both articles talk about the importance of clothing for certain occasions and how they need certain things for certain occasions. Adding to a collection is okay because everyone needs to stay up to date on fashion. This article also works well with the first article on dress in the 1920’s, by Kendra Van Cleave. Both articles talk about the dress code and the limits of the dress code. The article that talks about the 1920’s goes more into detail on ways to expand those limits, or completely get rid of those limits, while the article about the campus being a runway is about making the wardrobe bigger based on what others think is fashionable, as well as where someone can get information they need to stay up to date with fashion.
