1. How can science help to overcome the weaknesses and errors of human reasoning and provide a better way of knowing and understanding the world around us?
According to Krathwohl (1985), science is closely associated with discovering the truth in modern life. Science has helped us figure out about the world. We depend on science for unbiased information to make decisions because man is not a machine. Humans have different emotions and opinions that can influence his or her reasoning. Science is simply a way of knowing the truth through experimentations and observations without being prejudice. It sets standards on human reasoning on how to know and understand the world.
There are also other ways of knowing. It can be through personal experiences, observations, intuition, common sense, opinions, tradition and authority. But these ways are susceptible to biases and imprecision. Hence, it may lead to errors. With this, the process of knowing the truth has limitations. The data varies because of factors that influence it rather than on evidence and testing. Sometimes a person’s own opinion adds up with the data gathered. This can lead to a bias result.
Science as the systematic, rationale and logical process of human inquiry which is universally accepted provides a better way of understanding the world through scientific process. Science is a way of knowing that utilizes a series of facts, hypotheses and theories to explain a certain phenomenon or observation. The process of knowing can be interpreted as the reduction in uncertainty about the interpretation of evidence to the point where it crosses the individual’s threshold, that level of certainty where it becomes, for that individual, knowledge (Krathwohl, 1985). Before the truth becomes a theory it should be tested through several experimentations and observations. This process will alleviate the weaknesses and errors of human reasoning.
Science is characterized by objectivity, accuracy and precision....
