General Motor, one of the most prestigious automotive companies, has supplied hundreds of jobs for the citizens of Detroit. However, due to the closing of the GM factory in Detroit, citizens are suffering a crushing blow in their economy that is resulting in the lack of jobs in their community. Citizens are worried whether or not they’re going to be able to find jobs to take care of their families.

A factory that was once active is now calm. The tall giant is now vacant and silent, filled with only the mummers of rats as the neighbors’ complaints of infestation increases. The windows that were clean now collect dust and the walls have new tattoos (graffiti) and grows mold. The factory’s fast heartbeats of hammers now grow quite as the doors are chained down and forced never to be opened again. Supports grew weaker as the months past and the whistle that once blew signaling lunch time is now a cry for help. The building is also cold to the touch and motionless as if it had died. The smell of motor oil has all but evaporated and it gets unpleasant smell of mildew from the water that rots inside from the snow that creeps in through the broken windows.

Before the closing of the factory surrounding neighborhoods reaped the benefits of GM workers taking their lunch breaks as workers spent more money on local mom and pops restaurants. Because of the closing of the factory, residents are now seeing a decline in business. The building draws many people who reminisce on what this building has brought into the community. The GM factory came with money and mostly jobs. Without this building they lose jobs which means those who worked there are now unemployed and scraping by on what they have. Most people walk past and not acknowledge the place and it quickly becomes just another vacant building to them without importance, but a memory.
