Background

Genetic mutations and variations linking specific diseases are frequently being discovered since the human genome project was completed. The urge for implementing and developing molecular genetics laboratories is on the rise due to the rapid growth in biomedical research and the advancement in the laboratory technology. The main idea of this project is to introduce a new section of ‘Molecular Genetics’ in the Pathology service department. The laboratory should be capable of processing approximately 200 samples per day with the aid of the new equipment and the skilled staff handling the critical tasks. This laboratory will create many opportunities to the hospital and also offer test services to other facilities. It will take care of the increased number of fibrosis mutation tests and the prenatal carrier screening. The introduction of this section of molecular genetics will reduce waiting time for patients, reduce the turnaround time for obtaining biopsy results and reduce service costs for patients.

Executive Summary

Due to the rising demand on genetic tests in pathology services, molecular genetic laboratories should be introduced in public hospitals so as to increase the rate of service delivery and the efficiency in which the services are offered. The main challenge in delivery of genetic...
