Dear Mother,

How are you doing? I have missed you and the whole family. I’m sure it is much better back home than it is here. Every day it is getting colder and colder, with no nice, warm bed to sleep in at night. I know I will get over it, and all of the other inconveniences here. Just knowing the fact that I am showing off my nationalism and fighting for our country comforts me enough.

It is a cold October day and I am currently somewhere in France. I can tell we are nearing some big battles in this war, because of the talk of the other soldiers and the intense rifle training we have received recently. We also reside in a cold, dirty, infested trench. So many bad things in these trenches, such as diseases, and on top of that we must be ready at all times because we could get ambushed or bombed at any time. I know this is not want you want to hear, but it is simply the truth that I have to face.

I know this all sounds bad, but I don’t want you and the rest of the family to worry. If I worry too much, things can easily get worse so you must not worry as well. Don’t think for one second that this will be the last letter you receive from me, or you will never see me again, because I know for a fact that after this war, I will be back home with all of you. War is not easy, but I am prepared to take on whatever it throws at me and I will fight back twice as hard. This is all I can say for now but I promise that I will write back as soon as possible. Let the family know I love them and I will return home soon.

Sincerely, Your Son,
