Psychoeducational Session Summary 4

The end phase of counseling should be a joyous time as it ends one phase of learning and allows the participants to embark on another aspect of learning. Closing out a session requires the group members to say goodbye not only to the group environment they have been accustomed to but also to those persons who shared in this portion of learning with them.

As indicated by Jacobs et al. (2012) in the text, Group Counseling: Strategies & Skills, being clear about the purpose of the group is the most important concept to learn. The focus of this group session was clear as it was our final session together and the mood was not the usual upbeat and “happy” mood but it was more of a solemn and sad mood. The sadness was as a result of ending a period that had become normal and entering into a period that will be uncertain.

The format in this session was different from the previous sessions. Although relaxed, this session was used as a time to reflect on the growth each lady has made. A game was used to “lighten” the mood as I would recall statements each lady made during the first session. Each member listed the group member’s name they thought made the statement and once the correct member was identified, that member shared her experiences while in the group and her growth as a result of being in the group.

Joshua 1:9 reads, “Have not I commanded you? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be you dismayed: for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go” (King James Version, 1997). The ladies were encouraged that this transition phase will not be easy as they will no longer have the weekly support of each other to talk them through some of their most difficult situations.
