It is important for each and every student to develop lasting literary skills. It is a teacher’s job to facilitate the learning of each section in language arts to ensure their students success. From an early age teachers should convey the importance of reading, writing, speaking, viewing, visually representing, and listening to their students.

Reading is a student’s understanding of the written language; it is a way to journey through a world of information and stories. It is a way of decoding words to see how they form sentences, paragraphs, stories and even books. It is an extremely important way for people to share information and stories and thus is an extremely important skill for students to have. Children begin their journey towards reading starting at infancy. When a child is an infant they begin to learn words by having their parents and other adults speak to them, read them their favorite stories, play with alphabet blocks and draw and scribble shapes of letters (Koralek, NA.) As a child gets older they begin to identify written words such as their name and participate in classroom group readings both of which help to strengthen their reading skills. Each student enters the classroom with a different level of understanding and reading ability at the beginning of the year, it is the teacher’s job to facilitate the learning in their classroom and guide the understanding of their students. Teachers can do this in many ways, first is by allowing students to read and read often. The more books whether they be fiction, non-fiction, news articles or magazines a student reads the more practice they are getting reading and their skill level will improve. Students who read a variety of content often also improve their vocabulary, content, and background knowledge that will help them in whatever they read next (Gunning, 2010.)
