The topic of marijuana is talked about every second somewhere in America. For as long as it will be talked about, it will probably be a debatable topic as to whether or not it should be legalized. The American government has rejected many proposals in trying to legalize marijuana for economical reasons and the health of others. I think America should legalize it for many reasons. This decision comes with much research done and no personal experience.

Marijuana is a common name for its actual word Cannabis. Dried flowers from the Cannabis sativa plant result in Marijuana. You might stop and think to yourself that smoking marijuana isn’t as popular as drinking alcohol when actually 68.6 million people of the U.S population over 12 years old has tried marijuana at least once in their lifetime (Espejo). It’s amazing to look at these numbers and think that marijuana is, in fact, illegal. Right off the bat, that means 32% of the U.S population have committed a crime.

Smoking marijuana is very common between teenagers ranging from the ages 18-25. A survey was done that said 85% of seniors in high school claimed it was easy to obtain marijuana (Espejo). Many of these teenagers are making decisions of their own or are being influenced to smoke. At an age where you’re considered an adult in the United States, these teenagers should be mature enough to make decisions for themselves and deal with consequences if faced with them.

Many marijuana smokers do it because of the satisfaction they feel after smoking. Studies show that there are major risks to these side effects which in fact aren’t so “satisfying” after all. “The short-term effects of marijuana use include: memory loss, trouble with thinking/problem solving, loss of motor skills, distorted perception, decrease in muscle strength, increased heart rate, and anxiety (Williams)”.
