Oppose vs. Propose

In response to the memorandum of the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) suggesting that all Filipino units be removed from the college curriculum, I would like to make a stand supporting it. According to the supporters of the K-12 curriculum, one of the many reasons why it was correct to implement K-12 is because it gives the students the ability to work even after graduating from high school alone. That said, it implies that after high school graduation, students should already be well-rounded individuals, capable at any common field. Now, if you ask me, communication in filipino is one of the basic skills that a well-rounded individual should have. It is expected that any capable individual of our country be able to communicate in one of our most used languages, Filipino.

Since the medium of teaching that we are using in most subjects is currently english, the only immediate use of the Filipino language is for everyday communication which do not require intensive training in the said language. As is, the terms in Filipino are still insufficient to be used as a learning medium. Therefore, it is not that critical to learn Filipino intensively. Due to the six year high school education we have now, all skills in Filipino communication should have already been learned by an individual before getting into college. That said, by the time a student enters college, the only courses taken should be what hasn't already been tackled in high school.

"If you're going to remove FIlipino units, why not remove English units?" some people would argue. English is the medium of communication in the academe. "Why don't we use Filipino?" Papers, researches, textbooks in the higher fields of education are mostly in English. The most common fields of study, science, math, business, architecture, engineering, and politics have a multitude of terms in English that cannot be accurately translated to Filipino. As ideal as...
