Abstract

About 3 in every 10 people in America will be involved in an alcohol or drug related accident at some point in their lives. In 2004, 15,786 were killed in alcohol related crashes, which represents an average of one alcohol related fatality every 33 minutes. An estimated 308,000 people were injured in alcohol related crashes. This is an excerpt from a pamphlet I received from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Victim Services after a person suspected of driving under the influence back in August of 2010 hit me. I memorized this folded piece of paper while going through months of recovery, to this day I have no idea why I focused on what some see as meaningless facts. Sometimes I think it was because although I had the worst experience of my life, I took some small comfort in knowing that I am still here. Living in agonizing pain, feeling like I do not know the woman staring back at me in the mirror, hating the looks of pity I get from family, friends and acquaintances, wondering why this happened to me, actually hating another human being, but at least I am here.

Drunken Drivers Menace to Society

I do not believe there is much of a difference between a drunk driver and a person who is driving under the influence of a narcotic or other illegal substance, both are driving with their abilities impaired, so as far as I am concerned they are one in the same.

Everyday an innocent person’s life is changed in some form due to another person making a conscience effort to get into a vehicle and drive under the influence. There are some many other options instead of driving under the influence. Why not have someone else drive, why not take public transportation, why not just simply ask yourself, should I be doing this or do I want to hurt myself or someone else.
