Abstract

About 3 in every 10 people in America will be involved in an alcohol or drug related accident at some point in their lives. In 2004, 15,786 were killed in alcohol related crashes, which represents an average of one alcohol related fatality every 33 minutes. An estimated 308,000 people were injured in alcohol related crashes. In 2009, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that approximately one-third of all automobile crashes involved an alcohol or drug impaired driver. Furthermore, in an attempt understand just how many drunk driving offenders had prior DUI convictions on their records, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration obtained data from twelve states and discovered that nearly one-third of all DUI arrests and DUI convictions involved repeat drunk driving offenders. (“Source Investigations,” 2011) This is the reason why States must implement harsher penalties for those convicted of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Stricter laws would pose as a deterrence and discourage repeat offenders, it will make people realize that there are consequences to their actions and would make the person think twice before getting behind the wheel of a car, when they know they should not being driving.

Drunken Drivers Menace to Society

According to the Transportation Research Board 50 to 75 percent of convicted drunk drivers continue to drive on a suspended license, this topic is researched and the horrifying statistics are known, so when will lawmakers force people to be accountable for their actions?

Because drunk driving can result in unnecessary and premature deaths, permanent injury for survivors, and billions of dollars spent on medical expenses and insurance claims, drunk drivers should face stricter penalties for driving under the influence.
