ASSIGNMENT NAME: Ecological Footprints

Part 1 Footprints Calculation

The Ecological Footprint (EF) of all members’ household are calculated through provided spreadsheet. Spreadsheets are displayed in Appendix. Descriptions  Member 1 A female international student studies mater program in UNSW, and also does some part-time jobs in her spare time.

1. Housing: she is living in a small brick apartment near campus, shared with a young couple. The flat have 1 living room linked with kitchen, 1 master room suite and another single room with 1 bathroom. There is no garden in the unit. Electricity and water is provided but no gas using in this apartment. The hot water and kitchen stove is heated by electricity. 2. Food: she prefers vegetables, fish, egg and dairy product in her diet. Chicken and beef is acceptable but she dislikes pork. She likes cooking by self, seldom eats out. And she likes drinking boiled water, milk and juice, dislikes soft drinks or alcohol. Coffee or tea is consumed much less than average. The food waste rate is about 15%, lower than the average rate 26%. The reason is she arranges the food quite careful. 3. Transportation: She goes to school by foot, and she takes bus for part-time work about 5 km away from home (3 times a week). Every year she would come back to her mother country by airplane once. 4. Goods: She consumes clothes and other daily supplies just as other ordinary young girls. Cotton is the favourite, clothes of other material is not frequently purchased. And she doesn’t smoke cigarettes. 5. Services: As an international student, the education and insurance cost is much higher than local. In addition, the telephone fee is little bit higher since she needs to call overseas. Other parts such as entertainment are little bit below the average level. 6. Waste: mainly are papers and plastic packaging. Glass and metals are fewer, because she never purchase alcohol and can drinks. Footprints result: 5.2...
