Your Common Access Card, more commonly known as a CAC card. Your CAC is an important piece of identification issued to you. Not only is it a form of ID but a validation of what you can and can’t do. You are accountable to always carry it with you, especially on and around military posts.

There are many reasons why your accountable for not having your CAC card secured. To name a few basic ones, there is a security risk dependent upon the access of the places, As well as identity theft can make use of your own personal information for the gain of them self’s. To get in a little more detail of the security risks just mentioned. It only takes a computer savvy person to manipulate someone’s CAC card so that it looks convincing enough to pass off as the soldier that it actually belongs too. In saying this, the perpetrator can potentially waltz right in to a military base and can put a lot of people at risk by divulging sensitive information such as the defenses of the base. With the CAC card you have access to the computers on post, and in the wrong hands can give away tons of information just by its self.

Failure to keep accountability of your CAC card may result in penalties to include loss of computer access, a field grade article 15, which includes a loss of rank and pay, and/or the ultimate disciplinary action a dishonorable discharge from the military. Each penalty is entirely dependent upon the mindset of your chain of command. Not to mention, you are not just letting your self, but everybody down. Not being accountable for your CAC card only holds consequences for one’s self.

Look on the bright side; there are many ways to keep accountability of your personal CAC card to secure it in your possession. For example you could invest in a lanyard that is around the neck at all times, or even keeping it connected to their card by a string or cord.
