Prewriting for Letter Assignment
1. Theme/Topic: The theme/topic I chose was Family/Domestic Violence.
2. Angle: Arguable topics are those that have at least two sides. Choose a side that you agree or disagree with. I agree with the actions that were taken against the judge, but I feel they were lenient because of his position. The wife should have been held accountable for her actions.
3. Purpose and Thesis: The purpose identifies whether you’re writing to support, refute, or extend the ideas of the publication to which you are responding. The thesis statement lets the reader know what to expect in your letter. To complete your thesis, start with a formula such as “I agree with [topic/issue/author] because…” OR “I do not agree with [topic/issue/author] because…”I do not agree with the Associated Press with the consequences given to an Alabama judge for being arrested in a domestic violence dispute with his wife. His misdemeanor chargers were dismissed if he undergoes treatment in a drug and alcoholic pretrial assessment; depending on the circumstances an average person chargers would’ve stuck.
4. Reader/Audience Profile
a. Readers’ Expectations: Write down the specific expectations of readers of the publication and how you plan to accommodate them. Some people who find themselves involved in a domestic violence situation with someone of a higher statue (law enforcement, judges, political, etc.) will sometimes neglect to report the abuse. This due to the fact that most of them will get off, the complaint swept under the rug and the person being abuse is afraid of the repercussions after. We have to get help not for just the abused, but for the abuser.
b. Readers’ Values/Attitudes: Write down your readers’ values and attitudes toward the issue and how they will influence your letter. The victims of domestic violence need to be heard not scared, know matter of the authority...
