Down Syndrome Abortion is the Wrong Choice

Today, many women get an abortion when they find out their baby is diagnosed with Down syndrome. About 90% of women get an abortion because they think they would not be able to take care of the baby. Down syndrome abortion is wrong because of the fact that it is a livable disease and as people keep getting abortions we begin caring less for those who are imperfect.

The genetic cause for Down syndrome is when a person inherits all or part of an extra copy of chromosome 21. Some symptoms of Down syndrome are, decreased muscle tone at birth, extra skin at the nape of the neck, etc. Physical development for children with Down syndrome is often slower than normal.

Abortion is murder. (McDonagh 92). Abortion is the destruction of an unborn baby. Women know that what grows inside of them is not just a group of cells. They know from the beginning what is inside. Overwhelmingly, every 20 seconds an abortion is performed. 1.4 million women have abortions every year. This killing of babies is caused by the fact that 3 out of 4 Americans say abortion should remain legal. This proves that abortions are not only done for emergency purposes because this number is excessively high.

As more people keep getting abortions when they find out there baby has Down syndrome more people will think it’s okay and abortions will keep happening. So people don’t care as much anymore for those who have Down syndrome because it is perceived as an “abnormal” thing. “It is only when they live fully integrated lives in society and become an everyday sight that they will win the respect they deserve.” (Velasquez) The more these babies are born and kept by the mother the more other people will understand and care for these babies
