Letter to the Editor on Teen Pregnancy

I’m writing in response to Basch, Charles E. Teen Pregnancy and Achievement Gap Among Urban Minority Youth. I am writing this letter to give some additional information and also help others to look at this in an informative way. The article was very informational and helped me to look at teen pregnancy in a different way. With the big uprise in teen pregnancy parents, teachers, and staff members at schools should help or come up with a different way to teach and educate teens about how life will change should they get pregnant or have a child.

First, when parents and school member’s started seeing the uprising of teen pregnancy they need to address the issue when it started to change. They need to find a different way to teach sex education classes. Maybe get the school board and staff to talk with teen parents, see how they feel now that they are parents and talk about ways that they think could help the teens now. See if they would be willing to come to class and share what life is like being a teen mom/dad.

Secondly, teen pregnancy has been on the rise for many years. There could be many different reasons why this is happening. However, I believe it comes from lack of parenting, parent involvement, and even the teen feeling that want of being loved. I also believe that most teen pregnancy has a lot to do with the way they are brought up and if their mom was a teen mom as well. People say that teen mothers are less likely to complete high school and even less likely to attend college. Completing high school or even furthering their education has to be something that they want to do and accomplish. I feel that every situation is different and the ones that were driven, motivated, and had goals before they got pregnant may still be likely to go on to further their education.
