Big Data has the potentially to transformed development and accelerated social progress around the world, but there are issues of ownership, privacy, for its large-scale social impact. This paper explains the evolution of data in political campaigns. The techniques used a decade or two ago by political campaigns to predict the habits of citizens by current standards.

Data enables us to understand consumers’ desires and to manage content strategy; we have to manage all that data in a way that fuels customer engagement and curiosity. The idea that we can do vast amount of things with data that we simply couldn’t before is astonishing. Big data will change how we think about the world as we see it and our place in it.

Big data is becoming the oil of the information age; the foundation of new goods and services. Because people are surrendering into a data formatted society, from our friends on Facebook, and chatters on Twitter, to the way our cars computer records how our engine idles before it breakdown. As businesses mine and store more and more big data, shopping is becoming more and more personalized and targeted to the consumer. Big businesses use data to investigate and predict what the general population will buy and how they will spend. It took a decade and billions of dollars to decode the first human genome; today that same amount of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is sequenced in a day.

As we collect and crunch more data, the good news is that we can do extraordinary things like fight disease, unlock mysteries of science. The bad news is that it raises a host of worries for which society is unprepared. What does it mean if bank use big data to deny us a bank loan or considers oneself unfit for a surgical procedure, but we later learn the specific reason was because the preexisting condition was stored in data, information can be used from everything from predicting stock market trends and the spread of infectious diseases to the perfect moment to purchase a...
