Beloved Community

Martin Luther King Jnr. is one of the most remembered statesmen in the history of the world and one of the few I do revere. This is based on his approach in the struggle for justice and fairness in the U.S and the rest of the realm. In his efforts to define a proper strategy for the battle against all forms of discernment, Luther would always refer to the need of having a ‘beloved community’. After reading the “Beloved Community", I found it to be raising an appealing objection to the notion of the concept of the "beloved community" as is expressed by Dr. King. I find Dr. King to be a reasonable person, both in intention and action during the fight for the liberation of the oppressed.

The concept of the beloved community is interestingly brought out by Luther. For a beloved community, I would expect peace, harmony and tranquility to prevail. Luther looks at a society that is conflict, contradicting my general perception of what comes with the beloved society. From my own perspective, the conflict is brought out by discrimination of various groups within the society. In this case, even those that have been discriminated against must learn to love their society. He, however, goes ahead to urge those discriminated against to accept their state and live by it. I share an opinion with Dr. King in his argument that, those that are discriminated against need to look for non-violent means of pressing for their rights.

The interesting part of the ‘beloved community’ is that Luther expects persons that are being discriminated against to love their community. I would submit that he is right when he argues that the intention of those engaging in non-violent protests and boycotts should not be aimed at subjecting others into suffering and creating enemies. I believe that all those that live in the ‘beloved community’ must embrace each other and live as friends.
