Organizing Function of Management

According to Bateman and Snell, management is a world of action. It is a world that requires timely and appropriate action. It is a world not for the passive but for those who commit to positive accomplishments. Management requires the organization and coordination of the activities related to the running an organization based on established policies. Historically, organizing involved creating an organization chart by identifying business functions, establishing reporting relationships and having a personnel department that administered plans, programs, and paperwork. Now and in the future, effective managers will be using new forms of organizing and viewing their people as perhaps their most valuable resources. They will build flexible and adaptable organizations, particularly in response to competitive threats and customer needs. Progressive human resources practices that attract and retain the very best of a highly diverse population will be essential aspects of the successful company. Organizing activities include attracting people to the organization, specifying job responsibilities, grouping jobs into work units, marshalling and allocating resources, and creating conditions so that people and things work together to achieve maximum success (2009).

Burger King is the second largest fast-food chain in the United States, trailing McDonald’s. The company franchises more than 10,400 restaurants and owns about 1,000 for a chain wide total exceeding 11,455 with locations in all 50 states and 56 countries. The company serves 15.7 million customers each day and over 2.4 million Burger King hamburgers are sold each year across the globe.
