History of Architecture:

I. The second temple, the Erechtheion was the replacement for the old temple and housed that temple’s venerable wooden cult statue of Athena, which had been evacuated to Salamis at the time of Persian invasion. There are reasons why the new temple was not placed on the foundations of the old, but moved to an adjacent site immediately to the north: first, that it temple destroyed by the barbarians and second, that moving that temple to the north gave the better balance with the larger and wider Parthenon to the south.

II. A Spanish architect known to be the best representative of Catalan Architectural Modernism. His works expresses firmly his individual style and are mostly found in the Catalonian capital, Barcelona that includes his magnum opus. He introduced the craft and an art form made of waste ceramic pieces applied as surface treatment.

III. In the 1930’s, Le Corbusier expanded and reformulated his ideas on urbanism. After World War II, he attempted to realize his urban planning schemes on a small scale by constructing a series of unites or housing block units around France.

IV. The dedication to Hagia Sophia was really a dedication to Christ and the church was also known simply as Megale Ecclesia. It stood on the site of two earlier churches at one end of the ancient acropolis, alongside the principal square of the city – the Augusteion- and only a short distance from the imperial palace.

V. Gian Lorenzo Bernini was an Italian artist and a prominent architect who worked principally in Rome. He was the leading sculptor of his age, credited with creating the Baroque style of sculpture. In addition, he painted, wrote plays, and designed metalwork and stage sets.
