The first three habits of highly effective people are: Be Proactive, Begin with the End in Mind, and Put First Things First.

Habit 1: Be Proactive. Being proactive, in my opinion, is a combination of being a “go getta,” being responsible for yourself, and controlling what can be controlled. What is a “go getta”? A “go getta,” explained by a song by Def Jam artist Young Jeezy, is someone who is always out to get what they want. I believe that in order for people to be successful you must be a “go getta”; success being defined as someone who achieves their goals and is accomplishing what they want, not someone who hits the lottery. This can pertain to any type of success in life. For example, an individual who is looking for a job needs to be the one to research the type of job they want, find what is available, take time to build a resume and apply, learn what the company is looking for, prepare for the interview, and dress to impress. This is a great example of when an individual should be proactive to accomplish their goal. Being proactive also means being responsible. Being responsible is knowing what somebody should hold themselves accountable for, rather than blaming other people, things, or situations that may not have gone in the individuals favor. For example, if an individual receives a bad grade for one of his/her classes, then goes off in a rant complaining about how the teacher grades hard, how they couldn’t get transportation to school, and the class time being so inconvenient, they are being irresponsible. An individual who was responsible would’ve planned their transportation beforehand, planned things around class time so it wasn’t an issue or choose a different class, and spoke to the teacher about any problems while possibly asking for additional help. Rather than blaming others, a proactive individual would not have wasted the time of day and would have understood that they choose their own behaviors. Lastly to be proactive, an individual...
