“The Death of a Salesman” is about a salesman named Willy Loman. He has an “American Dream”, but he cannot make it come true. That is why he is stuck in his past and not able to move to the future.

His definition of success is having a big business, having a successful son and being well-liked.

None of his goals becomes true. Willy absolutely is not satisfied with his present life. He cannot let go of his past ideas of what makes success, learn from it and change his ideas to make a new future. He thinks too much about the past.

He does not listen to people around him.

He does not adjust his attitude, because he does not realize that his dream is wrong. There is no ways for him to change his life when he does not even know that it needs to be changed to the right way.

Willy is a failure. First of all, he is not a good father. He teaches his sons about what the success is from his own perspective. With Biff, he used to have high expectation on him when Biff was in high school. However, Biff does not become “successful” like what he wants Biff to be. That is why he criticize his son and mock him all the time. Happy is another son, who never be noticed from his father. Even though he has a good job, an apartment and plenty of women, he is still not satisfied and fulfilled. Happy is not “happy.” It is easy to see that the relationship between Willy Loman and his sons is not good.

Second of all, Willy cheats on his wife. He has a woman outside and never tell his wife about that. Biff knows the woman. He does not say anything. He just leaves. It makes Willy really mad.

Finally, Willy is failure as a salesman. It cannot be denied that he does not do well with his job.

Willy ends up his life with tragedy of his suicide. It can be considered as his another failure. He cannot find any ways to rescues his mind. His metal problem becomes worse and he is really depressed.
