1. Explain the function of assessment in learning and development?

Assessment is a good way of finding out what level a learner is working at; it gives a good indication of the learner’s knowledge and also is a way of finding out what learning has already taken place. It gives you a good guideline into what skills and competence the learner has acquired throughout the course or qualification. At the start the assessor will sit down with the learner and make an assessment plan for each stage of the learners chosen course. Assessment can be used towards a formal qualification, awards, certificates or a diploma in a particular subject. Assessment is a good method for your learner to demonstrate their knowledge and skills though activities, discussions and regular tasks therefore you are always assessing and making judgements whenever you come into contact with your learner; giving regular feedback and suggesting ways in which the learner could improve! Save your comments for work done or activities observed rather than comments directly aimed at the learner so as not to deflate the learner and keeping them fully motivated at all times. Assessment should not be confused with evaluation. Assessment is of the learner, evaluation is of the programme that the learner is taking, for example a qualification.
