Question1. The diagnostic criteria and hallmark features of Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia has been regarded as the classic psychotic disorder that has been considered to be at the epitome of a severe mental illness (Social Work in Mental Health, 2010). People suffering from this disorder are often not in contact with reality. This loss of contact with reality is in scientific terms is referred to as psychosis; psychosis refers to a cluster of symptoms which include disruptions in moods, thoughts, perception, language and behaviour (Burke, 2012). This disorder is defined by abnormalities in one or more of the following five domains: delusions, hallucinations, disorganized thinking (speech), grossly disorganized or abnormal motor behavior (including catatonia), and other negative symptoms (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). The impact of this disorder on the lives of the affected individuals and their families is often disastrous; Schizophrenia usually results in long life impairment and disability.
