Psychological assessment provides information to guide individuals, groups, and organisation to understand and make informed and appropriate decisions. Assessment can further serve many purposes other than previously stated. The South African society is multicultural and multilingual, therefore we also need to be aware of the impact culture and language has on assessment and we need to look for ways of addressing them. Psychometrics refers to the systematic and scientific ways in which psychological measures are developed, as well as the technical measurement standards (validity and reliability) required for measures. Psychological assessment is a proses-orientated activity aimed at gathering a wide array of information by using psychological assessment measures.

Developing a Psychological Assessment Measure

Developing a Psychological measure, consists of a few phases and steps that needs to be followed. It needs to be planned carefully, items needs to be written down, and the initial version of the measure needs to be administered so that the effectiveness of the items can be determined. The final items are chosen and the measure is then sdminidtrated to a certain group of representatives. This enables the validity, reliability and norms of the measure can be established.
