Introduction
Olympics games are the leading international sporting event featuring summer and winter sport competitions in which thousands of athletes across the planet in variety of competition. It covers five continents and the goal of the Olympics games is to contribute to building a peaceful and better world by educating youth through practised. In our group we chose Team USA which left London with a total of 104 medals (46 gold, 29 silver and 29 bronze), finishing at the top of the gold and overall medal standings. The 46-gold medal record was the most the United States had ever won in any Olympic event hosted outside the host nation.
Historical background
Ancient Greece was the birth place of the ancient Olympic festival and way was held every four years. It was founded by Heracles (The Roman herule); the ancient festival lasted for five days. Contest Winners were crowned with a wreath of wild olive and gained great honour.
Interesting facts
* Real Gold Medals
The last Olympic gold medals that were made entirely out of gold were awarded in 1912.
* The Medals
the Olympic medals are designed especially for each individual Olympic Games by the host city's organizing committee. Each medal must be at least three millimetres thick and 60 millimetres in diameter. Also, the gold and silver Olympic medals must be made out of 92.5 percent silver, with the gold medal covered in six grams of gold.
* A City, Not a Country
when choosing locations for the Olympic Games, the IOC specifically gives the honour of holding the Games to a city rather than a country.
* Norway has won the most medals (263) at the Winter Games.
