Communication Opinion Paper

Effective communication is key when it comes to the health care field.

This includes the communication between the providers, the patients and the establishment providing the care. It can lead to a life or death situation if there is any kind of miscommunication or none at all. When there is not enough communication going on in the health care industry, the proper medical care will not be given effectively or efficiently due to mistakes that will be made because things are not being made clear enough for that person to understand what needs to be done. People’s lives are at stake in this situation, effective communication should exceed way beyond expectations when considering someone else’s life.

Effective Communication and its Elements

Effective communication involves much more than just the understanding of the information that is being portrayed. How a person understands and how a person receives the information are two completely different things, so understanding feelings, thoughts, wants and needs are crucial when it comes to effective communication (Cheesebro, O'Connor, & Rios, Chapter 1, 2010).

How two people communicate with each other will determine whether their relationship is personal or professional. Becoming a person who is known, as a “Skilled communicator” requires learning the elements necessary for public speaking, interpersonal relationships, as well as business relations. There are four elements behind being an effective communicator and they are; sender, receiver, message and feedback. The first component is the sender/receiver, which gives information to someone by speaking to them and receiving back nonverbal feedback. “They message is the idea, thought, feeling or opinion to be communicate” (Cheesebro, O'Connor, & Rios, Chapter 1, 2010).
