Workplace Ethical Dilemma Paper

BSHS/332 Professional Ethical and Legal Issues in Human Services

In my personal Employee Standards of Ethical Conduct manual it states, “Value and assure equal opportunity for all individuals, regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age, religion, disability or any other discriminatory factor.” It is my belief that the CEO of our company has presented an ethical dilemma to his employees by imposing his religious beliefs on his employees. As the owner of our not for profit business he is allowed as an employer to talk about his religious beliefs with employees as long as employees know that continued employment or advancement within the company is not conditioned up acquiescence in the employer’s religious beliefs (EEOC, 2011).

In a recent communication with our CEO, the Headmasters were given “homework”. Our “homework” read, “I have not been reading my Bible daily like I should. I read my bible frequently, but have not been reading it daily! It is NOW REQUIRED reading for you and I will be testing you from time to time to see if you have. I ONLY want you to read the book of Proverbs as there is 1 Chapter per day equaling 31 Chapters in the book. Here is the RESOUNDING THEME you will glean from just reading 1 Chapter a day and it will only take you 5 minutes to do so, unless you’re a speed reader! Then you should finish it under 5 minutes the theme is Wisdom, Understanding, Knowledge and Discernment which everyone could use in their everyday life. I will go around the call today to get everyone’s thoughts and feedback on the pondering you did after having read it!”(L.B., 2014). I understand that my school is under the umbrella of a Christian based company but religion does not have play a role in our curriculum nor school as a whole.
