EXPERIMENT #3: Preparation Properties Hand Cream

The purpose of this experiment was to investigate the process of soap making and the properties of soaps and detergents.

METHOD & OBSERVATIONS (in Steps):

1. Fill a large beaker with 2/3 tap water. Heat to 80 degrees Celsius on a hot plate and use as a hot water bath.

2. Prepare six test tubes.

3. Mix 1.0g Stearic Acid and 1.5ml mineral oil in a test tube. Place in hot water until melted.

4. Mix 0.5g Glycerin, 1ml Triethanolamine, 10ml tap water in a test tube. Place test tube in water.

5. Allow both Step 3 & 4 to reach 80-90 degree Celsius.

6. Slowly pour oil mixture into water mixture. Stir until smooth uniform paste forms. Let cool.

OBSERVATIONS: white paste texture. Once it cooled, it was similar to water on the wrist.

7. Mix 1.0g Stearic Acid, 1.5ml mineral oil in a test tube. Place test tube in water.

8. Mix 0.5g Glycerin, 10ml tap water in a test tube. Place in hot water to heat.

9. Mix 1.0g Stearic Acid, 1.5 ml mineral oil in a test tube. Place in water to heat.

10. Mix 1ml Triethanolamine with 10ml tap water in a test tube. Heat in water.

11. Mix 1.0g Stearic Acid in a test tube. Place in hot water.

12. Mix 0.5g Glycerin, 1ml Triethanolamine, 10ml tap water in a test tube. Place in water to heat.

13. Mix 1.5ml Mineral Oil in with step 12. Place in test tube and heat.

14. Mix 0.5g Glycerin, 1ml Triethanolamine, 10ml tap water in test tube. Place in hot water and heat.

15. Mix 1.0g Stearic Acid, 1.5ml Mineral Oil, 0.5g Lanolin. Place in test tube and heat.

16. Mix 0.5g Glycerin Oil, 1ml Triethanolamine, 10ml tap water in test tube. Place in hot water and heat.

17. Pour Step 7 & 8 into one test tube. Stir and let sit.

OBSERVATIONS: No color noticed. Very clear/transparent. Mixture separated due to absence of triethanolamine. The top formed a hard-shell like coating (similar to wax).

18. Add steps 9 & 10 together....
