Background

Harley Davidson is one of the largest motorcycle companies in the world. Due to its clear and distinct view of the target market, it has sustained its competitive advantage and has survived many downturns and quality problems. In order to gain substantial competitive advantage, it has tried to incorporate optimized supplier relationships across the company. In order to achieve that, the company initiated a program called Corporate Supply Management Strategy (SMS). With this move, the company aimed at moving the company from a discrete procurement process which resulted in high manual activity, confusion in supply base caused due to site specific processes, to a more streamlined process with a long-term focus on supplier relationships.

Formation of Sil’K

The supplier Information link is an integrated information system to be designed for the purpose of achieving productivity by changing the existing approaches in people, process and technology. Using SMS as the starting point, Sil’K tried to move on from “strategy to action” to define the underlying processes required to realize the strategic vision. Based on the review of the currently prevailing as-is processes and the desired to-be processes for further improvements, a specification was made for the Sil’K system which was given to three of the shortlisted potential providers of the system, who would work for implementation and integration of the system across the company.
